Generally, the history of a sport is marked by continuous evolution. In track and field, however, this has not been the case. Certain world records set in the 1980s have remained unbroken for over forty years—a phenomenon unparalleled in any other individual sport. The history of my sport comprises two distinct periods that must be kept strictly separate: the 20th century and the 21st century. Athletes who achieved results in the last century belong to the first group, while those who achieved their best results in the current century belong to the second. The dividing line is the year 1975 (or 1974, in some cases).
